Terms of Reference

The University Executive Board is the senior leadership team of the University, led by the Vice-Chancellor, with corporate responsibility for managing the business of the institution.  The University Executive Board will work in partnership with the Board of Governors to determine the character, identity and strategic direction of the institution and will advise the Vice-Chancellor on all decisions and actions necessary for the conduct of the University and for the achievement of its objectives.

The remit of the University Executive Board will include the following:

  • To take a leading role in setting the mission and purpose of the University and developing the University Strategic Plan.
  • To review and approve faculty and professional service plans to achieve the overall aspirations of the institution.
  • To shape and influence the culture and values of the institution to enable the delivery of objectives.
  • To consider and approve the financial strategy and set the principles for planning and budget setting to ensure the effective management of financial, human and physical resources.
  • To establish measures of performance that can be used to determine progress against the strategy. 
  • To monitor and review all areas of the University’s performance and to identify opportunities for development to optimise the contribution of all parts of the University.
  • To facilitate the engagement and enabling of others in the University.
  • To bring to decision making knowledge of the external context in which the University operates.
  • To lead in the development of key strategic partnerships with the local community and relevant business, educational and government organisations nationally and internationally.
  • To be agile in responding to issues of change, internal and external, as appropriate to the University.
  • To work effectively in partnership with the Board of Governors, formal University committees or groups and to constitute ad hoc working parties as required to advise the University Executive Board on specific tasks.
  • To ensure compliance across the University with national legislation as it affects the University’s activities including (but not limited to) issues of risk management, equality, audit, health and safety, data protection and freedom of information. 
  • To ensure the accuracy and timeliness of statutory data returns to HEFCE and other relevant statutory bodies.
  • To act in an ambassadorial role internally and externally to enhance the profile and reputation of the University.
  • To periodically review the remit of the Board and the efficiency/effectiveness of its role.
