Students in the Portland Atrium

Supporting our ambition of becoming the UK's top modern university and one of the top 100 young universities in the world by 2030

While we recognise the challenges imposed by budget savings, having an Estate Masterplan is crucial for the long-term growth, success and sustainability of our university. It enables us to utilise our resources efficiently, creates a conducive campus environment, caters to the needs of our student population and contributes to our economic development. This masterplan will help us leverage our estate to its full potential and ensure that our university remains a leading institution in an evolving educational landscape.

Effectively manage our resources and infrastructure

By strategically planning the development and allocation of our estate assets, we can ensure that financial resources are utilised efficiently. This will help us identify areas where cost saving can be made, where investments should be priorities, and how to maximise the value of our estate within the limitations of the budget.

Crucial for creating a cohesive and contemporary campus

Our physical spaces play a significant role in fostering a sense of belonging, collaboration and academic and research excellence. Upgrading and modernising our facilities, including lecture halls, laboratories, classrooms and social spaces, will help attract and retain the best students and staff. A well-maintained inviting campus serves as a testament to our commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience.

A SMART campus

Our aim is to create an integrated physical and digital campus in collaboration with the Digital Transformation Plan. This programme will look at improving the management information on building space usage to allow for better management of space and effective use of the campus, improvement in security with better digital access controls, development of apps to signpost hot spots to campus users, direct our people to their next appointment through integration with the timetabling/calendar and maps and apps to augment physical campus tours/open days with the virtual campus. The teaching facilities within lecture and seminar rooms will also be enhanced to improve their performance, making them easier to use, and more integrated with modern user devices.

Prioritising sustainability

We're committed to becoming climate positive by 2030 — one of the most ambitious environmental targets across the UK Higher Education sector. The masterplan considers the university’s environmental impact and sustainability goals by prioritising energy efficiency, green spaces and sustainable transportation. Our new buildings will all be fossil-fuel free, minimising their carbon footprint over time. We’re also aiming for all our new buildings to achieve ‘Outstanding’ ratings for sustainable design from BREEAM (the world’s leading sustainability validation and certification system) and ‘A’ rating for energy use and carbon emissions.

Contribute to the overall economic development of the university and city

By aligning our masterplan with the principles of sustainability, we aim not only to benefit our university community but also to positively impact the city of Portsmouth. As one of the largest stakeholders in the local area, we recognise our responsibility to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of the city. Through our masterplan, we intend to enhance the built environment and foster relationships with the local authority, local businesses and organisations, to support the growth and improve the quality of life within our city.
